The Hard Decision to Walk Away
There comes a time in life when one chooses to walk away. It’s never easy to walk away. Walking away means leaving a familiar environment. Walking away means doubting if the decision is right. Walking away feels like you are letting people down. One has to walk away when the environment is constricting one’s sense of self. One has to walk away if they feel they can’t be their true self. One has to walk away if it means stepping away results in new opportunities and growth.

Knowing Your Worth and Valuing Life Energy
After working at the same place for 7.5 years, I realised it was time to move on and start a new chapter. Why leave? All my negotiation attempts were unsuccessful. It began when my plea for on-call payments that truly reflected my worth was rejected. I was expected to accept less than a quarter of my hourly rate—something I simply couldn’t agree to. I value my time and know my worth. Inspired by Vicki Robin’s book, Your Money or Your Life, I asked myself a vital question. How much do I value my life energy? Am I getting full value for this precious resource? Valuing my life energy means maximizing my income, and I wasn’t willing to settle for less. Interestingly, the place I’m moving to now is one I walked away from five years ago. I left after being lowballed with a rate half of my worth. Fast-forward to today, I was headhunted by a manager there with an offer 1.3 times more than my previous hourly rate.

Financial Independence Creates freedom
Having built up savings and investments gave me the freedom to walk away. Even if there was nowhere to go, I would still walk away. When you understand your worth and it’s not valued, look for other opportunities. There will always be another door that opens. Your true value will be recognized and appreciated there.
